Essential Fatty Acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6

Fatty acids are the building blocks of fat and some are essential, meaning the body is unable to produce them so they must be obtained through the diet. Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids provide energy and aid in fat-soluble vitamin absorption and all dogs and cats rely on dietary Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids for a variety of functions, including vision and brain development, circulatory health, immunity, and skin and coat health.

Freeze-Dried vs. Air-Dried - What's the Difference?

Freeze-Dried vs. Air-Dried - What's the Difference? 8/13/2018 - By ZIWI An often-asked question we receive from pet parents who are considering feeding ZIWI Peak Air-Dried food is how our product differs from freeze-dried foods. To understand the difference, it’s helpful to understand what causes foods to spoil in the first place. Unless it is frozen or preserved in some manner, meat “spoils” or “goes off” very quickly, due to the presence of microorganisms, such as mold spores and bacteria. These microorganisms cause proteins and fats to break down, releasing toxins into the meat. They also multiply, eventually...

Protein Deception by Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

The Protein Deception 6/15/2018 - By Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA ZIWI’s consulting veterinarian, Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA discusses why the designation of “high protein” can be over-rated, while the quality of protein in pet foods misunderstood and undervalued. You are what you absorb, not what you eat. The defining of quality protein depends on the species consuming it. Parsley - Superfood for Dogs

Parsley - Superfood for Dogs 5/23/2018 - By ZIWI From their ancestral hunting and scavenging days, to their present-day place as human companions, dogs have a need for diets high in natural meat and organs – the foundations of nutrition for carnivores. However, like all mammals, dogs also have a need for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that can’t be provided by meat alone. At ZIWI, we complete the nutritional profile of our high-meat inclusion recipes by adding selected “Super Foods,” including curly parsley. Parsley is widely considered within holistic pet nutrition circles to be a “super-herb.” Parsley...

Benefits of Grass-Fed Meats

2.23.18 - Nutrition: Benefits of Grass-Fed Meats Posted by ZIWI Pets Here’s a brief look at some of the reasons behind ZIWI’s commitment to source grass-fed and finished meats from local New Zealand farms for our recipes: In many parts of the world, animals are raised in crowded feedlots, on grain-based commercial feeds, and are given hormones and low doses of antibiotics to speed weight gain. New Zealand’s temperate climate allows livestock to graze outdoors in grass pastures, all year long. Raising livestock this way is more expensive and takes longer, but the meat produced from grass-fed and...
