How do you eliminate pathogenic bacteria in your air-dried foods?
Our unique twin-stage air-drying process preserves the nutritional benefits of our natural ingredients while eliminating pathogenic bacteria, such as salmonella and Escherichia coli (E.coli).
As part of our commitment to quality, we test all of our products to ensure they are safe and free of harmful pathogenic bacteria, prior to them leaving our kitchens.
What are ZIWI's regulatory standards?
ZIWI exports to over 30 countries around the globe and meets or exceeds all of their import regulations. Below are just a few of the regulator bodies overseeing importation of ZIWI products:

Are your cans BPA-free?
ZIWI® Peak cans have BPA-free food lining, ensuring that the contents are as safe and natural as possible.
What testing does ZIWI® Peak do?
ZIWI® Peak complies with the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) approved risk management programme. The programme is based on a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan. Samples from every production batch are tested to ensure they meet the specified range for food quality and safety. We conduct laboratory testing on all production to ensure compliance with stringent EU regulations and to meet our own strict in-house requirements.
There are strict limits imposed for these tests, and MPI maintains an overview of the results.
Does ZIWI® Peak use Ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, or Propylene Glycol?
No, absolutely not.
Does ZIWI® Peak meet AAFCO standards?
Our products are manufactured to the highest international quality benchmarks in a controlled, sophisticated plant. All ZIWI® products meet or exceed the stringent New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries and AAFCO-approved standards.
Does ZIWI® Peak use chemical preservatives?
In order to ensure optimum freshness, we use natural preservatives without the need for low-quality preservatives such as sugars or glycerines. ZIWI® Peak air-dried food has a shelf life of 21 months from manufacture provided it’s unopened. Once opened it should be used within eight weeks.
Can your products be cooked or warmed in a microwave?
ZIWI® recipes should not be cooked or heated in the microwave or by any other method. Cooking or heating would cause deterioration of the nutrients that make our wholesome recipes a balanced and complete diet for your pet.
Can ZIWI® be used after the Best Before date?
In order to establish our expiration dates, we conducted shelf life and durability studies to determine if any of the products attributes changed over time or under various conditions. Our guarantee to you is that our product will maintain its integrity through the printed expiration date; and we recommend you feed our products before the printed Best Before date.
I’ve heard about the FDA Report on DCM. Tell me more.
FDA Report on DCM
In July 2018, the FDA announced that they have begun investigating reports of DCM (canine dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs eating certain pet foods, many labeled as "grain-free," which contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes.
More recently, on June 27th, 2019, the FDA also issued an updated press release which included a list of brands connected to DCM reported cases.
ARE ZIWI® PEAK RECIPES SAFE? ARE THERE ANY DCM CASES WHERE ZIWI® PEAK WAS BEING FED?
ZIWI® foods are safe. There were no reported cases where dogs showed DCM symptoms while being fed a ZIWI® Peak recipe.
ARE GRAIN-FREE FOODS SAFE?
Although the FDA is investigating grain-free foods, it’s important to know there is no scientific evidence that has connected DCM to any type of food, including grain-free foods. While the FDA is actively investigating a potential correlation between grain-free diets and a rise in cases of DCM, the concern appears focused on diets that utilize large amounts of potatoes, legumes and peas.
IN REGARDS TO DCM, HOW ARE ZIWI® RECIPES DIFFERENT?
Different from most grain-free foods, ZIWI® Peak’s raw-inspired recipes feature high inclusions of meat, is low in carbohydrate and free from unwanted carbohydrates, such as potatoes and lentils.
Our recipes feature up to 96% meat, organ and seafood inclusions ─ natural sources of amino acids, including taurine, important for heart health.

What type of testing does ZIWI conduct?
ZIWI conducts feeding and palatability trials using a variety of methods most often working with the pets of our staff and family friends in relaxed home conditions. We also work with a university in New Zealand recognized for their veterinary program to assist us with these feeding and palatability trials. ZIWI does not undertake any invasive animal testing. This is against our policy.
