Top Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eliminate pathogenic bacteria in your air-dried foods?
Our unique twin-stage air-drying process preserves the nutritional benefits of our natural ingredients while eliminating pathogenic bacteria, such as salmonella and Escherichia coli (E.coli).
As part of our commitment to quality, we test all of our products to ensure they are safe and free of harmful pathogenic bacteria, prior to them leaving our kitchens.
What certifications does ZIWI® Peak hold?
ZIWI® products are sourced and manufactured in New Zealand; and exported to over 19 countries. Because of our robust offering around the world, it is imperative that we exceed all international quality standards. Organizations who have certified our products include, but aren’t limited to, the following: New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, AAFCO, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, European Union, Japan, and Australia.
What carbohydrates are in your canned food?
ZIWI® is committed to the health and well-being of pets, and continually strives to produce premium foods that provide the best and most natural nutrition possible.
Over the past several years, we have received numerous requests from consumers to remove tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) and agar agar (binding/gelling agents) from our canned recipes. As an innovative leader that values consumer feedback, we actively began searching for healthier alternatives to these ingredients. Part of the research involved feeding trials, which determined that most pets prefer canned foods with loaf-like texture. To achieve this consistency in canned foods containing large amounts of meat, some type of binder is required.
After evaluating many different binding ingredients, our extensive research indicated that the healthiest solution was using a small amount of chickpea. Chickpea has natural binding properties, is high in protein and provides digestive benefits for both dogs and cats. The inclusion of chickpea has only increased the carbohydrate content by an average of 1.8% on an as-fed basis, and only half of the total carb content is from chickpea. The balance of the carbohydrate was already existing in our recipes and provided by our meats and kelp.
Dogs and Cats thrive on a high-meat diet, so we have also increased the overall meat content in our cans. ZIWI® Peak canned recipes now contain a minimum 92% meat, organs, bone, and New Zealand Green Mussel (on DM basis). The net result of these changes is an improved and even HEALTHIER formula, which we’re sure your pet will love!
Over what period should I transition from my old food to your food?
We recommend a gradual transition when changing your pet’s diet, to minimize the potential for digestive issues, and to allow your pet’s digestive system time to adjust to the high nutritional value of our recipes. Start with a small amount of ZIWI® added to your pets’ current food then gradually increase the amount ZIWI, while reducing the other food over a period of at least 7 days. Please refer to our transition guide.
Do I need to add supplements when feeding ZIWI® Peak?
ZIWI® Peak foods are complete and balanced for all life stages and all breeds. We do not recommend adding supplements to your pet’s diet unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian.
What is the source of your meats and seafoods?
ZIWI’s meats and seafood are exclusively sourced from clean, green New Zealand pastures and pristine New Zealand oceans. All of ZIWI’s meats are free of GMOs, antibiotics, growth promotants and added hormones.
Can ZIWI® help my pet shed less?
All ZIWI® Peak air-dried and wet foods include 3% New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel, a natural source of omega 3 fatty acids. Better than highly processed fish oils or inappropriate plant oils, Green-Lipped Mussel is a natural and bioavailable ingredient that may reduce shedding and keep your pet’s skin and coat soft and healthy.
What is your animal testing policy?
Because of our love and compassion for pets, we would never be involved or affiliated with anyone that engages in inhumane treatment of animals. All ZIWI® feeding trials or research programs involving animals are conducted using in-home testing protocols, often recruiting the voluntary services of our employee’s pets, as well as the pets of our loyal customers. ZIWI® does not, never has, and never will undertake any form of caged or invasive animal testing or feeding.
Where are your air-dried foods made?
ZIWI® Peak's air-dried foods are proudly made in New Zealand─ crafted in small batches in our family-owned kitchens.
Is ZIWI® suitable for diabetic cats and dogs?
When feeding a diabetic dog or cat, it's important to consider the amount and type of carbohydrate in the food. Many of today's pet foods are low in meat inclusions, high in carbohydrate and often feature unwanted high glycemic ingredients, such as potatoes or tapioca starch.
Just as the natural diet, ZIWI® foods are low carbohydrate and feature high inclusions of meat, organs and bone ─ with no added high glycemic ingredients.
While our foods should be appropriate for your diabetic dog or cat, with any medical condition we always recommend you consult a trusted veteriarian or nutritionist to ensure you've made the best choice for your pet.
What is the “ash” in the Guaranteed and Typical Analysis of ZIWI® Peak?
Ash is the inorganic mineral portion of any substance. When referring to dog and cat food, “ash content” is the mineral matter, including magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and copper.
What are chelated minerals?
Chelated minerals are minerals which are bonded to amino acids. They are more easily absorbed during digestion than non-chelated minerals, which often get passed in the stool. ZIWI® Peak uses chelated minerals because better nutrient absorption supports better health for your pets.
From what countries are your vitamins sourced?
In order to ensure our recipes are complete and balanced for all life stages and all breeds, we include a small amount of carefully selected vitamins and minerals sourced from reputable and traceable suppliers in New Zealand, Europe, Japan and the USA.
Why do you include chicory inulin in your recipes?
Chicory inulin, a prebiotic, helps maintains digestion, supports immune functions and promotes better nutrient absorption.
Why do you include kelp in your recipes?
Kelp (also known as rockweed or Ascophyllum Nodosum) contains high levels of magnesium, protein, vitamin A, iodine, bromine, and phosphorous. ZIWI® Peak air-dried recipes contain .5% kelp as natural source of these essential nutrients.
What is green tripe and why do you include it in your recipes?
Green tripe is an important part of cats’ and dogs’ ancestral wild prey diet. It comes from the stomach of grazing animals, such as deer, sheep and cattle. Green tripe is extremely palatable, easily digested and gentle on the digestive tract, it is great for picky eaters and may be useful for pets with sensitive stomachs, IBD and IBS. Our green tripe is NEVER bleached or scalded, just gently cold-washed, to help retain its full nutritional value.
What are New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels?
The New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM) is exclusive to New Zealand and is a rich natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, glycogens, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, which nutritionally support long-term joint health, as well as promoting a healthy skin and coat. All ZIWI® Peak recipes contain at a minimum of 3% GLM, farmed using ecologically-sustainable practices.
Are your canned and air dried foods raw?
ZIWI® Peak recipes are handcrafted with high inclusions of meat, organs, bone, and seafood. ZIWI® Peak’s unique twin-stage air-drying process results in highly nutritious, shelf-stable and ready-to-feed product that is as nutritious as a complete raw diet with the convenience of a scoop and serve food. During the canning process of ZIWI® Peak wet recipes, our foods are sealed and heated in order to preserve and stabilize the contents. They are then heated at the minimum temperature and time required to meet the international regulations for human and pet canned foods.
How often should I feed my dog or cat?
We recommend feeding your pet twice daily. We suggest talking with your veterinarian to determine the best feeding schedule for your pet.
Have you ever had any recalls?
No, ZIWI® has never had any recalls or product withdrawls.
What does complete and balanced mean?
ZIWI® Peak foods are complete and balanced ─ meaning that they meet all the daily nutritional requirements your pet needs. In fact, our foods exceed the minimum nutritional requirements, to ensure your pet reaches their peak conditioning!
Why is there sometimes variability in my ZIWI® Peak food?
ZIWI® Peak is a natural food, handcrafted in small batches, featuring high inclusions of meat and organs and excludes artificial fillers, dyes and preservatives. This, in combination other natural factors such as age and seasonality of the ingredients we use, often results in variability of shape, size, color, texture and odor. This variation is perfectly normal and is an indicator as to how natural the food really is!
Are your cans BPA-free?
ZIWI® Peak cans have BPA-free food lining, ensuring that the contents are as safe and natural as possible.
Can I feed my cat ZIWI® Peak Daily Dog Recipes?
ZIWI® Peak foods are formulated to meet the unique needs of each species. ZIWI® Peak dog foods do not meet the special nutritional needs of cats; therefore we do not recommend feeding cats our dog recipes.
What testing does ZIWI® Peak do?
ZIWI® Peak complies with the New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) approved risk management programme. The programme is based on a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan. Samples from every production batch are tested to ensure they meet the specified range for food quality and safety. We conduct laboratory testing on all production to ensure compliance with stringent EU regulations and to meet our own strict in-house requirements.
There are strict limits imposed for these tests, and MPI maintains an overview of the results.
How do you develop feeding recommendations for your foods?
ZIWI® Peak feeding guidelines are consistent with AAFCO recommendations, which are based on the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements for Dogs and Cats. This is a compilation of scientific research done on dog and cat nutrition and is the reference book used by professionals worldwide.
What is the digestibility of your air-dried and how is it determined?
Unlike most pet foods, ZIWI® Peak recipes are highly digestible ─ over 95%. Digestibility is calculated by measuring the amount of calories and nutrients consumed and the amount of calories and nutrients excreted in the pet's stool.
Can ZIWI® Peak be fed as a topper or mixed with another food?
For optimum health we recommend you feed 100% ZIWI® Peak. However, if you wish to feed ZIWI® Peak with another food such as raw meat, kibble, freeze dried, cans or any other food type you can at any ratio you like. ZIWI® Peak can be fed in many different ways as your pet’s sole daily food, as a nutritious topper on your existing food or as a tasty treat.
Can I rotate different ZIWI® Peak proteins?
There are differing opinions on the topic of rotating proteins. If you decide that it is the best option for your pet, we recommend a gradual transition between proteins, to minimize the potential for digestive upset. Please refer to our transition guide.
What is the difference between your air-dried and canned food?
The foundation of ZIWI® Peak's air-dried and wet recipes are the same ─ both are rich in New Zealand sourced meat inclusions and low in carbohydrate. The main difference is moisture content. ZIWI® Peak air-dried foods feature up to 14% moisture, while our wet foods feature up to 78% moisture. Whether you choose our air-dried or wet foods (or maybe both) either option is a complete and balanced food that your pet will surely love!
Is it normal for my pet to have softer stools or diarrhoea during the transition period?
It is not unusual for your pet to experience soft stools during the first few weeks when transitioning to ZIWI® or any other new food. Many pet parents report that their pet’s stools are smaller and firmer after they adjust to their new ZIWI® recipe, due to its high digestibility. If your pet’s stool continues to be loose, it may be an indication of being overfed. Be sure to weigh your pet regularly, consider other foods and treats your pet receives and adjust the feeding amount accordingly. To determine the exact amount of ZIWI® to feed your pets please visit our Feeding Calculator.
Do I need to slowly transition between different proteins?
We recommend you transition between flavours over a few days, however if your pet has a sensitive stomach we suggest you transition more slowly over a week. Please refer to our transition guide.
Is there bone in ZIWI® Peak’s ‘Daily-Cat’ and ‘Daily-Dog’ Moist Rabbit and Lamb Cuisine can food?
Bone is part of a wild-prey diet for carnivores and is a natural source of minerals, including calcium and phosphorus. This is why bone is an important part of our recipes.
Unlike most pet foods that use highly processed ingredients, our ingredients are minimally processed, so you may find small pieces of bone in our food ─ most likely in our Rabbit and Lamb recipe that features minced wild rabbit.
Does ZIWI® Peak use Ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, or Propylene Glycol?
No, absolutely not.
What’s the fat content?
Fat in ZIWI® Peak is the same as what naturally occurs in the meat of the source species. The percentage may look high because of the low moisture in air-dried ZIWI® Peak. But on an as-fed basis our veterinary experts advise that the levels are the best for cats and dogs, just as they would consume naturally in the wild. For the detailed analysis of the fat content of each recipe please refer to our analysis in each of the product sections.
Why does ZIWI® Peak use deer antler?
ZIWI® Peak ‘Good-Dog’ Deer Antlers are a 100% natural, mineral-rich, long- lasting dog chew. Deer antler is basically bone material, naturally shed by the deer. Mineral analysis shows high levels of calcium and phosphorus and trace levels of iron, zinc and sodium. Deer antlers are slowly ground down by chewing, providing a dog with enjoyment at the same time as helping to keep teeth and gums healthy. Because they’re natural they are easy on the digestive system, rarely causing tummy trauma. Our deer antlers are not available for sale in North America.
Is there carrageenan in the canned food?
ZIWI® Peak recipes do not include carrageenan.
Is there any bone included in the ZIWI® Peak recipes?
Yes, on average 3% finely ground bone is included in each recipe.
Does ZIWI® Peak meet AAFCO standards?
Our products are manufactured to the highest international quality benchmarks in a controlled, sophisticated plant. All ZIWI® products meet or exceed the stringent New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries and AAFCO-approved standards.
What’s the difference between protein from meat and organs compared to protein from carbohydrates, plants, or grains?
Dogs and cats are carnivores and naturally thrive on a high meat and organ content diet, not on low cost fillers such as rice, pea protein, grain, maize, corn, beet pulp, potatoes, carrots and meat meal.
ZIWI® Peak food contains none of these carbohydrate and plant based fillers. Our recipes are carefully crafted to mirror the whole-prey, nutrient dense, high meat content diet that dogs & cats require for optimum health.
Many allergies, skin conditions, overweight pets and many other health issues are food related and result from eating foods full of highly processed carbohydrate based fillers. They are not natural foods to the dogs and cats.
We are proud to have over 95% fresh meat, organs, seafood and bone in all of our food products.
The 5% non-meat ingredients that we also include such as kelp, parsley, chicory, lecithin, and undigested grasses from the green tripe aren’t grain based carbohydrates and add many valuable nutrients. We don’t add any sugars or glycerines and our food has a digestibility rating of over 95%.
Our first seven ingredients, which constitute over 95% of the total product, are fresh meat, organs, bone and seafood. We invite you to compare our ingredient list to any other brand.
If my pet has the treats, how much ZIWI® Peak food should it get?
ZIWI® Peak Good Dog Rewards™ are extremely nutritious and are fabulous for training your dog and rewarding good behavior. We recommend you consider all treats your pet is given each day, and adjust the feeding amount accordingly to compensate for the additional calories being consumed.
Can ZIWI® reduce my pets stool volume, stool smell and excess flatulence (gas)?
Often dogs and cats have large, smelly stool or excessive gas is because their food is highly processed featuring excessive carbohydrate or fillers such as grains and potatoes. Many of these ingredients are not properly digested or metabolized by your pet, and pass through, undigested. The fermentation of these foods in your pet’s digestive track produces excessive and smelly gas.
Why not just feed raw meat?
Feeding a raw meat diet comes with some challenges, mainly the inconvenience of having to prepare and thaw in preparation for your pets meal and as well as the “yuck” and hygiene and risk factors of handling raw meat. ZIWI® Peak air-dried is a complete and balanced food which provides all required nutrients, eliminating the need for expensive supplements. Additionally, it is over 95% digestible and extremely nutrient-dense, meaning you feed less, and your pet absorbs more of the nutrition. Our twin-stage air-drying process eliminates the risk of pathogenic bacteria, providing a shelf-stable product with the scoop-and-serve convenience of feeding straight from the bag.
Where can I find nutritional information about your recipes?
Detailed nutritional analysis on each recipe is available on our website, by clicking on the product and downloading the Typical Analysis PDF from the link below the “Guaranteed Analysis” table.
Does ZIWI® Peak use chemical preservatives?
In order to ensure optimum freshness, we use natural preservatives without the need for low-quality preservatives such as sugars or glycerines. ZIWI® Peak air-dried food has a shelf life of 21 months from manufacture provided it’s unopened. Once opened it should be used within eight weeks.
What size bag should I buy?
Once opened the bag should be used within 8 weeks. To determine the size bag your pet will consume in 8 weeks, we recommend using our Feeding Calculator, to determine your pet’s daily serving.
Is the fat level in ZIWI® Peak too much for my dog or cat?
We, as people, tend to be wary of fat (certainly too much fat), but it’s a vital and essential source of energy for your dog and cat. It also supplies essential fatty acids which play important roles in metabolism, cell membranes and skin permeability in pets.. Without fat, they lack energy and don’t burn calories. The perfect daily diet for dogs and cats is rich in proteins and fats sourced from raw meat and organs balanced with vitamins and minerals. It must be low in carbohydrates as they’re not easily digested. It’s how ZIWI® Peak is made!
Don't pets need dry kibble to keep their teeth clean?
No, kibble isn't needed to keep your pet's teeth clean. As carnivores, dogs and cats have a single-hinge jaw; designed to swallow food whole, rather than chew. Kibble often offers little to no benefit for the removal of tarter or plaque as they aren't designed to chew it.
For good dental health, it's best to take our cues from Mother Nature. The natural diet is free from excessive carbohydrate or sugar, so it's best to feed a food rich in protein and low in carbohydrate. Also in nature, dogs and cats consume and chew on bone - nature's toothbrush. So in addition to feeding a low carbohydrate food like ZIWI, we recommend you offer your pet raw or air-dried bones. Ask your pet specialty retailer about our air-dried bones ─ a natural and delicious way to keep your pet's teeth clean!
ZIWI® Peak’s air-dried daily serving seems small – will my pet be satisfied?
Dogs and cats are satisfied when their nutritional and calorific needs are met. During the transition period, your pet will gradually adapt to the physical sensation of being less full, but you can be assured that they are receiving everything they need for optimal health and vitality. We recommend dividing the daily serving amount into two or three feedings during this time. If you pet appears to be asking for more food, we recommend you resist the urge to overfeed and offer them some extra affection or play time instead. Remember that ZIWI® Peak is extremely nutrient-dense, so less is required to provide the correct amount of calories and nutrients.
Is ZIWI® appropriate for pets with urinary tract issues, crystals and stones?
Dogs and cats are carnivores and designed to eat meat. Foods high in grain and starches are alkaline, which impacts the pH level of the urine, also making it more alkaline. This could potentially lead to the formation of struvite crystals or stones. Feeding a food that is high in meat─ rich in protein and low in carbohydrate, will make the urine more acidic. An acidic urine is normal for dogs and cats and promotes urinary health; likely to prevent the formation of crystals and stones. In addition to a protein rich food, it's also important your pet gets plenty of moisture in their diet.
ZIWI® Peak's air-dried foods are appproapriate for urinary health as they are high in meat content (96%) and ultra low in carbohydrate. ZIWI® Peak's wet foods can also be beneficial to your pet as they are not only high in meat inclusions and low in carbohyrate, they are also rich in moisture. A natural and delicious way to introduce additional moisture into your pet's food!
With any medical condition, we recommend consulting with your trusted veterinarian or nutritionist to ensure you make the best choice for your pet.

Will ZIWI® Peak be suitable for my kitten, puppy & my senior cats or dogs?
All of the ZIWI® Peak air-dried and canned recipes are complete & balanced. They meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages, including the growth of large breed puppies. ZIWI® Peak can be introduced to kittens and puppies as young as 6 weeks of age and is also suitable for senior cats and dogs.
What recipe would you recommend if my dog or cat has skin issues or Allergies?
ZIWI® Peak recipes are all limited ingredient diets and are high in essential meat & meat proteins. They are grain free, soy free, & potato free. We offer a variety of proteins that can be fed exclusively or rotated. In our experience, many skin & allergy issues are often food related as many pet foods are made from highly processed ingredients and fillers such as grains and potatoes, and may contain artificial colors or flavors, carrageenan, chemical preservatives, added sugars, gelatine, & glycerine. As these are not natural ingredients the dog or cat would choose to eat they can often be the underlying cause of the skin and allergy issues.
Will the Green Lipped Mussel in ZIWI® Peak help with my dogs Arthritis?
All ZIWI® Peak recipes include a minimum of 3% whole green-lipped mussels. Green lipped mussels contain high levels of natural glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega 3 which may be helpful in improving mobility and reducing joint inflammation in dogs with Arthritis. Green Lipped mussels contain the following nutrients:
- 0.05gm/100gm Glucosamine
- 0.13-0.14gm/100gam Chondroitin Sulphate
- 1.265gm/100gm Omega 6
- 0.995gm/100gm Omega 3 (Our Mackerel and Lamb recipe contains higher levels of Omega 3 at 2.674gm/100gm)
How long can the canned food sit in my pet’s dish?
Your pet's bowl should be emptied of uneaten food within four hours. Opened cans should be tightly covered and refrigerated at temperatures between 4° - 7°C or 40-45°F, for a maximum of 7 days.
Can your products be cooked or warmed in a microwave?
ZIWI® recipes should not be cooked or heated in the microwave or by any other method. Cooking or heating would cause deterioration of the nutrients that make our wholesome recipes a balanced and complete diet for your pet.
What is the shelf life (unopened) of ZIWI® products?
Air-Dried Food Recipes: 21 months* - Air-Dried Treats Recipes: 21 months* - Moist/Canned Recipes: 36 months* - Oral Healthcare Chews: 24 months* - *From date of manufacture (Please refer to “Best Before” or “BB” date imprinted on product packaging)
Should I freeze, refrigerate, and/or add water to ZIWI® Peak Air-Dried recipes?
ZIWI® Peak’s unique twin-stage air-drying process results in highly nutritious, shelf-stable and ready-to-feed product that does not require rehydration, freezing, or refrigeration. When frozen or refrigerated food is placed at room temperature, moisture often condenses on the surface of the food, which could facilitate microbial growth or mold. ZIWI® air-dried recipes should be stored tightly sealed in their original package in a cool environment, away from direct sunlight and heat, and used within 8 weeks of opening. If you choose to add water to your pet’s ZIWI® Peak, we recommend that any unused portion be disposed within 4 hours to minimize the risk of microbial growth.
Can opened ZIWI® air-dried recipes spoil or go bad?
We recommend you feed our air-dried food before the printed Best Before date and within 8 weeks of opening the package; however, these dates are intended as guidelines. If the product is not stored in a sealed bag or air-tight container, it can be exposed to air and/or moisture which could cause the food to become dry and brittle, or could create the potential for mold to grow; either of these would be an indicator that the food has not been stored properly and should no longer be consumed by your pet.
Can the air-dried food be stored in a ziplock bag, or plastic container?
No, we don’t recommend you store our food in Ziplock bags, or a plastic container. The reason for this is the pouch it comes in is sterile, and designed to maintain the products optimum freshness. ZIWI® air-dried recipes should be stored tightly sealed in their original package in a cool environment, away from direct sunlight and heat, and used within 8 weeks of opening.
Can ZIWI® be used after the Best Before date?
In order to establish our expiration dates, we conducted shelf life and durability studies to determine if any of the products attributes changed over time or under various conditions. Our guarantee to you is that our product will maintain its integrity through the printed expiration date; and we recommend you feed our products before the printed Best Before date.
What is the measurement of one scoop?
Our ZIWI® scoop (which is included in all ZIWI® Air-Dried bags) holds approximately 2oz / 56.6g of product. For cats and small dogs weighing less than 5kg, we recommend you weigh the ZIWI® Peak Air-Dried pet food on an accurate scale to minimise risk of under or over-feeding.
How long can the air dried food sit in my pet’s dish?
Although it is fine to leave our air dried food out for your pet to graze on during the day, keep in mind that it will be exposed to bacteria so may spoil and become stale the longer it’s left out. Therefore we recommend you dispose of any uneaten food in your pets bowl if it’s been out for more than 8 hours.
Why has the meat percentage changed on my bag of ZIWI® Peak or my ZIWI® Peak wet food?
Dogs and cats require a diet rich in meat ─ our foods are perfectly designed to match their biological needs and feature high inclusions of meat, organs and bones.
Our previous ZIWI® Peak air-dried packages featured 98% meat, organs and New Zealand green mussels, and our wet food featured 92% meat, organs and New Zealand green mussels (93% for cats). While high meat inclusions are important, an optimal balance of nutrients is essential too.
Although our foods have sufficient levels of both omega 6 and 3, to achieve optimal balance, we’ve added lecithin, a source of omega 6. As a result, the overall meat inclusions in our air-dried packages have been reduced to 96%, and our wet food is now 91% for dogs, and 92% for cats.
While your pet likely won’t notice the small change, our foods are designed to ensure peak conditioning; so you and your pet can continue to enjoy life’s adventures together!
Where are your wet foods made?
ZIWI® Peak's wet foods are proudly made in New Zealand, using 100% New Zealand sourced chicken, meat and seafood.
Why isn't glucosamine and chondroitin in your ingredient list?
There is 560 mg/kg of glucosamine and 1300 mg/kg of chondroitin in our foods. You won't find glucosamine and chondroitin in the ingredient list of our foods as they occur naturally. Mother Nature knows best and offers a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin in the meat cartilage, bone and green-lipped mussels featured in all ZIWI® foods.
I’ve heard about the FDA Report on DCM. Tell me more.
FDA Report on DCM
In July 2018, the FDA announced that they have begun investigating reports of DCM (canine dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs eating certain pet foods, many labeled as "grain-free," which contained a high proportion of peas, lentils, other legume seeds (pulses), and/or potatoes.
More recently, on June 27th, 2019, the FDA also issued an updated press release which included a list of brands connected to DCM reported cases.
ARE ZIWI® PEAK RECIPES SAFE? ARE THERE ANY DCM CASES WHERE ZIWI® PEAK WAS BEING FED?
ZIWI® foods are safe. There were no reported cases where dogs showed DCM symptoms while being fed a ZIWI® Peak recipe.
ARE GRAIN-FREE FOODS SAFE?
Although the FDA is investigating grain-free foods, it’s important to know there is no scientific evidence that has connected DCM to any type of food, including grain-free foods. While the FDA is actively investigating a potential correlation between grain-free diets and a rise in cases of DCM, the concern appears focused on diets that utilize large amounts of potatoes, legumes and peas.
IN REGARDS TO DCM, HOW ARE ZIWI® RECIPES DIFFERENT?
Different from most grain-free foods, ZIWI® Peak’s raw-inspired recipes feature high inclusions of meat, is low in carbohydrate and free from unwanted carbohydrates, such as potatoes and lentils.
Our recipes feature up to 96% meat, organ and seafood inclusions ─ natural sources of amino acids, including taurine, important for heart health.
More details about our recipes are available in our FAQs and on our website, which includes the typical analysis for each recipe.
