To ensure optimum quality and flavor, we recommend feeding ZIWI Air-Dried within 8 weeks (56 days) of opening. It should be kept in its original packaging, tightly sealed, away from direct heat and sunlight.

Which size bag of ZIWI air-dried should I buy?

There are two things you should consider when feeding ZIWI Air-Dried as a complete daily diet:  1) What is my dog’s recommended feeding amount? 2) How many servings are in each bag size?

Determine your feeding amount: The ZIWI Feeding Calculator

The feeding chart on the bag is for general reference – we recommend using the feeding calculator on our website for the most accurate feeding amount, based on the age, weight and activity level of your dog. Go to www.ziwipets.com/ziwi-difference/feeding-calculator

To determine your dog’s daily caloric needs, you need to know its age, as well as its current weight and activity level. Our feeding calculator lists the following activity level options:

  • Less Active Adult and Senior: The typical family house pet - receives up to 1 hour of exercise and normal play per day. It also covers older, senior dogs (normally over 7 years old, but depends on the dog’s breed. Many dogs are considered senior once they enter the last 25% of their average lifespan for their breed).
  • Average Adult: Dogs that have between 1 and 3 hours of exercise/play per day.
  • More Active Adult: Dogs that have more than three hours of exercise per day, such as: Agility dogs, hunting dogs and service dogs.
  • Highly Active Adult: Dogs that are highly active most of the day, such as: rescue dogs, herding farm dogs, sled dogs, etc.
  • Puppies (up to 12 months depending on breed): Puppies need a significantly higher number of calories per day, to support proper growth and development. We recommend you weigh your puppies weekly, and adjust feeding amounts as needed.
  • Pregnant: Dogs that are pregnant during the last 5 weeks need a higher amount of calories per day to support the growing litter and to prepare for birth.
  • Lactating: Lactating (breastfeeding) dogs need a higher amount of calories to sustain the energy required to produce milk for their young. Peak lactation is estimated around 4 weeks after birth.

Servings per Bag:

To determine how many days each bag will last, divide the weight of each bag by your dog’s recommended feeding amount. Purchase the bag that is closest to, but does not exceed 56 days.

Example:  The recommended daily feeding amount (of the ZIWI Peak Air-Dried Lamb Recipe) for a “Less Active” adult dog, weighing 11 lbs (5 kg) is: 64g (2.25oz or 1.25 scoops)

8.8 lb / 4 kg:                4000g / 64g (141oz / 2.25oz) = 62.5 servings

5.5 lb / 2.5 kg:             2500g / 64g (88oz / 2.25oz) = 39 servings

2.2 lb / 1 kg:                1000g / 64g (35oz / 2.25oz) = 15.5 servings

1 lb / 454 g:                 454g / 64g (16oz / 2.25oz) = 7 servings

A dog weighing 11 lbs (5 kg) would consume the 5.5lb (2.5kg) bag in about 39 days, which is well within the recommended timeframe.

What are my feeding costs per day?

Once you know how many servings are in each bag for your dog’s needs, divide the retail price of the bag by the number of days it will feed your dog.

Why shouldn’t I use a bigger bag size?

ZIWI’s unique, twin-stage air-drying process eliminates pathogens and naturally preserves the meats, organs and other nutrients in our whole-prey recipes. Once the packaging is opened, environmental conditions can potentially affect the quality and palatability of the food. Our tests have shown that ZIWI air-dried retains its palatability and nutritional content when properly stored and used within 8 weeks.

The ZIWI feeding calculator is intended to be used as a general guideline; individual pet’s nutritional needs can vary. Therefore, we recommend you monitor your dog’s condition and adjust the feeding amount if you find they are losing or gaining weight.
