For us 2 legged humans, the words ‘activity level’ can have many different meanings. If you go for a moderate run every day you may say you have a ‘high activity level’. But compared to a professional sportsman like a member of the almighty New Zealand All Blacks who have careers playing a physical professional sport your activity level would be considered much less active. The same principal applies for dogs that walk every day for leisure, and dogs who work on farms herding sheep or cattle.
Assessing your dog or cats activity level correctly is extremely important as just like humans, they need the correct amount of calories (kcals) to support their daily lifestyle. On the other hand, if you are feeding your dog or cat too much for their lifestyle, you may be over feeding and giving them more calories than they need resulting in ongoing health issues. So, getting it right… In relation to our ZIWI® Peak Feeding Calculator we recommend that you follow the guidelines below to determine the correct activity level for your dog. But please note – every dog and cat is different, so if you have done the hard yards and worked out feedings amounts through trial and error, stick to that! If it’s working, there is no need to change.
Poppy the Puppy – Poppy the puppy is your typical pup, a bundle of joy and a bundle of energy! The activity level of puppies is broken down into 4 different age brackets. It is important to remember to keep track of your puppies age and adjust as indicated by our feeding guide. Our stages are 6-12 weeks, 3-4 months, 5-7 months and 8-12 months. Check and adjust as the puppy moves from one age bracket into another as they will need less food.
Sammy & Sumo! – Sammy is 5 and Sumo is 10 years old. Sammy and Sumo are inside dogs and get an eagerly awaited 1 hour long walk every day to the beach plus play time with their family in the evening. In relation to our feeding guidelines we would classify Sammy & Sumo being in the ‘less active adult or senior’ category. This is the “typical” adult dog activity level.
Oscar the Great! – Oscar is hard in training for competition season! Training 2-3 times a day sure does take it out of a dog! Ever heard of the saying ‘energy in, energy out’? For this amount of activity Oscar would be in our ‘more active adult’ category as he is burning a high amount of calories every day in his training.
Frodo the Farm Dog! – Frodo is hard at work day in, day out… and he loves it! Herding sheep and hanging out with Dad, it doesn’t get much better than that! Frodo’s tough work ethic would place him at the very top of our activity groups in the ‘highly active adult’ category. Oh, and Frodo’s other highlight of the day? Tucker time of course!
