Kelp (the “super food”) has been a widely popular and promoted supplement for people for some time. In fact, you may even take Kelp yourself as a daily supplement. It contains oodles of vitamins and minerals, some of which are incredibly hard to get from other sources. For these reasons alone, it is a no-brainer that we add kelp to our dry formula – It adds so much extra goodness that makes ZIWI® Peak just that much more nutritious and full of goodness.
Kelp (also known as rockweed or Ascophyllum) is a brown seaweed, it has long fronds without a midrib and narrow unflattered, straplike blades with air bladders that grow singly and are scattered throughout the plant. Kelp has been reported to have a lifespan of about 20 years and is the dominant species of the sheltered and semi-exposed intertidal zone. Environmentally sound hand harvesting techniques are used to safeguard the natural resource and to ensure only kelp is harvested. Like everything in ZIWI® Peak formulas, we only source our kelp from natural clean sources, ensuring only the best kelp is used.
So why is kelp so good for your pet? Kelp contains over 100 nutrients that your pet needs. It is a highly nutritious vegetable: high in magnesium and protein, vitamin A, iodine, bromine, and phosphorous. It also contains vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E, zinc, potassium, calcium, sodium, chloride, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, and other trace elements. The nutritious sea vegetable is also well known for its assistance with thyroid problems, often associated with iodine deficiency. The rich natural source of iodine in kelp makes it a perfect supplement to keep your pet’s entire glandular system, in particular the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, in healthy working order.
This also ensures your pet’s metabolism works efficiently, which as we all know, is an important component of sustaining a healthy weight (for both pets and people alike). Kelp also looks after your pet’s general health & wellbeing. It cleanses the digestive system and keeps everything well balanced. As kelp is high in iron, it fortifies the blood, which helps the heart pump more efficiently. In older dogs, kelp is recommended to strengthen the immune system, protecting your pets from a range of harmful diseases. In addition to the vast internal benefits, Kelp is believed to improve dull coats, heal dry and flaky skin, and reduce bad breath. Sounds good to us!
Interesting Fact: Kelp contains the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food – 10 times more than milk. Wow!
