New Zealand is the only country in the world where Green Mussels are found (that’s pretty cool!). They are farm-raised in New Zealand in the oceans surrounding our beautiful country and are harvested and collected daily. As the mussels are suspension feeders (filter plankton), no feed is used in the farming of the mussels like with other mollusks. There is no negative impact on the natural ecosystem. Like all of our seafood in ZIWI® Peak there are strict government-managed, fully sustainable systems that govern all aspects of the process. The Blue Ocean Institute in New York voted mussel farming practices as the World’s most eco-friendly seafood.
As well as being a delicacy (they are absolutely delicious to eat) – They are a 100% natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, glycogens and omega 3 fatty acids, with proven ability to nutritionally support long-term joint health. Joint inflammation and osteoarthritis are common ailments in cats and dogs, especially as they age – that’s why we add it. We know it is helping to give cats and dogs a new lease on life with improved mobility.
The volume of Green Mussel we add is recommended by our animal nutritional experts so there is no need to add expensive supplements. All of our ZIWI® Peak cuisines in both Moist and Dry contain a minimum of 3% Green Mussel.
